Each TOK essay title is a knowledge question. For example, the November 2022 prescribed title: “If pushed too far, can open-mindedness itself become restrictive? Discuss with reference to two areas of knowledge”.
First Step: Identify one claim and one counterclaim in the knowledge question.
-
Claim: Open-mindedness is generally valued in TOK as it allows us to consider new perspectives, challenge biases, and expand knowledge.
-
Counterclaim The question asks whether too much open-mindedness can become restrictive or paradoxical, since being open should mean “free.”
Second step: Identify parallels and contrasts in relation to your selected AOK
Parallels and contrasts in AOK: while open-mindedness is a precondition for inquiry, excessive openness can actually restrict the development of reliable knowledge. The sciences rely on empirical verification to filter out unproductive ideas, while history depends on critical source evaluation. Each field sets its own boundaries for acceptable openness.
Third step: Provide specific evidence in support of your arguments
-
Claim: Open-mindedness drives progress (e.g., acceptance of quantum theory or evolution).
-
Counterclaim: If we are too open to every alternative hypothesis, pseudoscience or conspiracy theories, we are constantly re-opening settled debates can restrict progress.
